Whether you're looking for an engaging read during your vacation, or some food for thought as you prepare your business for the second half of the year, FutuConnect is here to help!

In our summer edition, we’ll start things off by discussing ways for business leaders to build resilience, followed by a look at preventing exclusion with responsible design practices. We’ll also focus on spotting use cases for machine learning, the importance of offering high-quality critique, as well as what open source means in the context of making music.

This month, to coincide with Pride month in many of the countries where Futurice is based, our external article focuses on the value of diverse perspectives, in this case, in the context of policy-making and STEM. It’s an inspiring story about empowerment, and how opportunity doesn’t just happen – it has to be created.

The next issue of FutuConnect will arrive in September – until then!

Form critique with love

Hearing opposing views and receiving critique is a crucial part of learning and improving. In his blog post, Pekka Puhakka emphasizes the importance of distinguishing the concepts of criticism and critique from each other. Opinion-based criticism can crush all creativity, while well-reasoned critique can collectively improve the quality of design.

β€œIf you don't make the pathway for people to be able to get here, they're not going to be able to get here. And these laws are never going to change without someone questioning why they were written in the first place.”

Biswajit Paul is a STEM policy manager based in the U.S. state of Washington. His interview highlights the great value of diversity in the creation of policies meant for human beings. As creators of services and products, we at Futurice recognize that we should take a page from his book, and encourage you to do the same. Diversity is needed everywhere around us, in all industries and areas of society.

What open source can do for music making

What open source can do for music making

If you have access to the insides of a thing – in the case of open source software, the code – you have the opportunity to learn from it, experiment with it, and understand how to build something like it. The same holds true for more things than just software and, to illustrate that, Erich Grunewald’s blog post focuses on open source music.
