Dev Breakfast by Futurice

Good morning!

With this long winter slowly receding, it is a great time to use some of the newfound energy from the impending spring to do some reading! This month’s Dev Breakfast has some hot takes on the field of data and AI and what they mean for the world :)

Meet the curator of the month

Dev breakfast newsletter curator of febraury 2025 month Pontus Mauno

Pontus is a Data Engineer / Analyst / Advisor / Scientist trying to harness data- and Artificial Intelligence - based solutions to make the world a better place. This especially applies to his current role working for the Finnish public sector, helping public organizations be more data-driven and ensuring they are ready for their first AI steps.

Outside his work he spends time with his family, exploring the Baltic Sea with a restored wooden fishing boat during the summers and skiing in the winters.

Open source data engineering landscape 2025

By Alireza Sadeghi

On a broader level, while many of us are working with proprietary data tools within say GCP, AWS, and Azure, Alireza does a great job explaining the way things are looking for open source data engineering! It is for example ever more possible to build a competitive and performant end-to-end analytics platform with embedded AI solutions purely with open source components.

Claude 3.7 Sonnet and Claude Code - Building effective AI Agents

By Anthropic

The AI race is once again heating up, earlier with the ruckus DeepSeek caused and now with Anthropic’s new models that they promise to outperform the previous kings of the hill such as OpenAI o1 and indeed DeepSeek. What’s especially interesting is the take of Anthropic on the future of their models, ie., that they foresee that their models will mature in 2025 to be able to (agentically) complement human teams and that in 2027 their models will reach such a state that they are able to achieve breakthroughs themselves. (For more context, read the future classic “Building Effective Agents” by Anthropic)

Harnessing advanced technology in international
criminal investigations

By UNITAD

A dear colleague of mine who was part of the operation, Tommi Niinimäki, shared with me a paper published by UNITAD on how analytics and other advanced technologies have been used in the real world to analyze and provide evidence on war crimes perpetrated by ISIS. Apart from the horrendous context and the clever use of tech, the paper reminds me of the influence and value data and AI-based solutions can provide even when dealing with the darkest side of humanity.

Know your curator

Tell us about one project you’ve worked on that you found particularly interesting or challenging.

Maybe the most interesting was the project where I did an AI-powered analysis on all the strategies, goals, and visions of every ministry and agency in Finland to see whether they are currently headed towards their goals and what kind of capabilities they might be lacking.

What’s one skill or technology you’ve learned recently that has had an impact on your work?

AI literacy - I feel that even today a great part of the working population is underusing or not using for example GenAI at all to help them in their work.

Is there a hobby or interest that you’re passionate about?

Anything maritime and hands-on is a great getaway from all the tech and busy hassle of working life and life on land in general :)
