Oskar is a problem solver who enjoys diving deep into topics and understanding how stuff works under the hood. He prefers to use what is already available to solve problems and takes a holistic approach to the idea of using the best tool for the job. When he’s not at work solving problems and automating things he enjoys tinkering with his home automation setup. Once in a while he also finds time to read books and go outside.

Screw motivation, what you need is discipline

The title of this piece is a bit provocative, but the actual message is quite uplifting. You should practice discipline so that you can feel good after completing your tasks instead of waiting to feel good in order to start them. “You don’t wait until you’re in Olympic form to start training. You train to get into Olympic form”. Be warned though, the author occasionally uses some strong language.

What’s one skill or technology you’ve learned recently that has had an impact on your work?

In my experience communication is the single most important skill in any knowledge work situation. You’re always working with other people, in one way or another, and good communication saves you from unnecessary work and pain.

How do you stay updated on the latest industry trends and technologies?

I like to let time be a filter for what I read. This means I don’t follow any social media feeds directly. I usually opt for periodic newsletters (like this excellent newsletter) that collect the best articles from the last day, week, or month. When I want to dive deeper into a topic I read books because with a book there have also been several filters in place to ensure the content is, at least mostly, accurate, well structured, and well written.

Is there a hobby or interest that you’re passionate about?

I’ve been interested in home automation for years now. It just keeps getting better and more interesting. I run Home Assistant with a bunch of lights and sensors and I’ve also integrated our heating system into it. We just moved to spot electricity pricing, so I foresee a lot more optimizations and even more integrations in the near future. “I’ll save us money” - Me, when I buy more electronics to save a few cents in electricity costs.
