Dev Breakfast Edition #28 | November 2021

Good morning

This month's newsletter comes to your inbox from Futurice's northernmost permanent office in Tampere. In the springtime, Tampere needs to pass that title for a brief moment to one of our fun activities called Operation Snowflake when a group of colleagues rent cabins from the north and spend the week skiing and working remotely.

Antti

Antti is a functionally-oriented full-stack developer from Futurice Tampere and finds it very weird to talk about himself in third person. He can often be found argui– I mean (he means? Damn!) sophistically discussing the latest in web frontend and explaining how an Antti is just an Antoid in the category of frontendo-developers! This is why the theme of this month’s newsletter is about both functional matters as well as the web frontend. In case you’d like to hear more about what Antti has to say and happen to understand Finnish, Antti is one of the hosts of the Webbidevaus.fi podcast!

Suits the simple ol’ me!†eli

CSS is Going Gosh-Darned Hog Wild, I Tell Ya What

JavaScript moves fast, HTML glacially slow, CSS somewhere in between. Here’s a great, easily skimmable rundown on what’s bubbling under right now! I personally cannot wait to get my dirty paws on container queries.

What is Phoenix LiveView

What Is Phoenix LiveView?

Phoenix Framework is a kinda-sorta Ruby on Rails but written in Elixir, a proper functional language. In the last couple of years it has had this new LiveView feature, allowing programmers to build pretty smoking fast and sweet web applications that act as if they are SPAs, but they’re not! Utilizing websockets and the crazy good parallelisation features of BEAM, the Erlang virtual machine, it’s possible to say bye-bye to React and friends yet still provide ace user experience.

TechWeeklies Talk: Eleventy + Ghost + Netlify Functions
