Dev Breakfast April 2023

Good morning!

In Helsinki, April has been really warm and the increased daylight time has been most welcome. This edition of Dev Breakfast is focused on writing as a tool in your everyday life. Writing is part of our work as developers, from writing pull requests to writing blog posts to keeping a work journal. In this newsletter, there are three articles exploring why you should write, what to do with your journals, and an example of a great blog series.

Meet our curator of the month

Emmi Kokkonen

Emmi is a full-stack developer who has had a diverse career in developing software for almost 8 years. She specializes in developing modern services and is really passionate about creating good and accessible services for people to use.

Currently, she is focused more on backend development. In her spare time, she has a lot of creative hobbies that she spends her time on (knitting, sewing, weaving, and painting to name a few). She also reads a lot, likes to take long walks in nature, and journals almost every day.

Kirjoittaminen kuuluu kaikille (Writing belongs to everyone)

by Susanna Hast

This column is written in Finnish but the machine-translated English version is understandable and quite good. In this column Hast writes that writing is not a luxury and not only for people with special talent. Instead writing is a skill that belongs to every human being, and it is an important tool to understand yourself better. I was greatly inspired by this text and it motivated me to start writing more.

The journal dilemma

by Suleika Jaouad

The Isolation Journals is a writing community founded by Suleika Jaouad three years ago. The Sunday newsletter is free to subscribe to for everyone. It was difficult to choose just one newsletter from all of them. In this newsletter the topic is about the question of journals and privacy, what one should do with their journals after they have passed away. It’s a bit of a morbid question, but none of us know how much time we have left. This is also a question that I need to think about as I have been journaling as a mental health practice for the past two years.

Practical React Query

by Dominik Dorfmeister

Earlier this year my task was to implement React Query to an application I was working on. I found Dorfmeister’s blog post series on React Query very helpful. As the newsletter topic is writing as a tool, this is a great example of how you can expand on a topic beyond documentation, give practical tips and answer questions and struggles people have with a tool or technology.
