Good morning!

“Service Design is dead! Long live Service Design!”

Lately I have been wondering what is the role of service design in the future. Mostly, the viewpoint has been personal: where should I focus next? I have discovered multiple directions, and I think the future will be a combination of many. That is why I have chosen three different articles that are to do with strategic design, strategic foresight and combining business design into service design.

Meet our curator of the month

Suvi Helen

Suvi Helén is a design professional with 17+ years of experience, proudly representing Tampere, Finland. She has been working in the field of customer experience her whole career and in recent years, her focus has been on complex problems clients face: world is changing drastically, economy and environment are a concern, AI is the new black, etc. Her interest is to develop businesses and organisations, with a designer’s tools, in a way that they can perform in this time and the future.

Strategic foresight takes more than Artificial Intelligence

By Heidi Hammarsten

The article emphasizes the indispensable role of human intuition in strategic foresight and scenario planning. While artificial intelligence can process vast amounts of data, the article argues that human intuition is crucial for interpreting complex patterns and envisioning future scenarios. I was pointed to this article by my talented colleague Ida Rainio who masters the field of strategic foresight.

Know more about your curator

Tell us about a project you’ve worked on that you found particularly interesting or challenging.

I’ve always loved processes. I was super excited when I was able to combine a human-centered design approach to process modelling in PSHP (current Pirha, welfare area) Support Functions. I created the approach from scratch and rapidly changed the approach when Covid hit, and everything was done via Teams. You can read more about the case itself here.

Any tips for maintaining a healthy work-life balance?

My tip for maintaining a healthy work-life balance is to keep busy outside work. Eg, in my case, a child who does a lot of sports and a dog that is hyperactive keeps you off from the computer quite efficiently.

What hobbies or interests are you passionate about?

In my free time, when I’m not taking a kid to practice or a dog to a walk, I love handcrafting, especially sewing and knitting clothes. I tend to combine this with listening to podcasts (I’m a heavy user of Yle Areena) or audio books.
