Design Breakfast by Futurice

Good morning!

Here we go, design friends. The cozy season is here, so go ahead and brew yourself a black tea with a splash of oatmilk, get on the couch and enjoy my curation of internet finds that I felt were worth sharing.

Meet our curator of the month

Paul Hermann

Paul is a Senior UI/UX Designer at Futurice, with a focus on UI. In his project work, he loves to collaborate with developers and ensure the initial ideas make their way into implementation. Outside of work, you can find him going for bikepacking trips or enjoying his playlists on his beloved Stereo HiFi.

Podcast: Tech won’t save us

With Paris Marx

I’ve really liked this podcast series for its systematic critical perspective towards the fancy tech hypes that we like to buy into these days without much care for consequences. For the majority of my time in the tech industry, I really didn’t care to reflect on them, and I am pretty happy to have this resource to balance my opinions better.

Newsletter: Dense Discovery

By Kai Brach, published weekly

This is the only newsletter I actually read, and have been for a few years now. Kai does a great job curating the indie internet scene. The newsletter includes books, in-depth articles, visual design, and typography.

Book: Design is a job

By Mike Monteiro

This was my first book on design, and it seems to never get old for me. I consider this a base lecture for everyone who has to wrestle with the badge of "being a creative” of some sort.

Know your curator better

How do you stay updated on the latest industry trends and technologies?

I used to be an avid reader of the design bubble on Twitter, but recently logged off more and have honestly been waiting for news to reach me. For design trends and news that directly affect my work at Futurice, our internal design bubble has done a great job of keeping me in the loop thus far.

What emerging technologies or trends are you excited about?

Arguably going in exactly the opposite direction, I was very interested in seeing retro/vintage tech emerge for its pure and calm nature (iPods, digicams). I am confident that this trend will go beyond nostalgia and eventually form future product design cultures.

What’s one skill or technology you’ve learned recently that has had an impact on your work?

Just very recently I have decided to catch up on accessibility knowledge as next year will change the industry by introducing breakthrough regulation (EAA) for a multitude of industries. While there are pretty compact certification and learning programs on the theoretical parts of accessibility, the internal transformation towards accessible product design processes at scale turned out to be a lot more challenging. Stay tuned to see what we’ve been cooking!
